Formados en Des Moines, Iowa, en 1995, Slipknot es una banda de metal alternativo formada por nueve miembros que han tomado como apodos números de serie de la cárcel.
El lineup estabilizado, en orden del 0 al 8, incluye el DJ Sid Wilson, el baterista Joey Jordison, el bajista Paul Grey, el percusionista Chris Fehn, el guitarrista James Root, al sampler y programaciones Craig Jones, el percusionista Shawn Crahan, el guitarrista Mic Thompson, y el vocalista Corey Taylor.
En 1996, el grupo edita su álbum debut autoproducido titulado “Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.”, llamando la atención de diferentes discográficas, inclusive Roadrunner, con la que finalmente firmaría la banda al año siguiente.
El álbum de presentación oficial llevaba el mismo nombre que la formación y se edita en 1999, pero no sería hasta al año siguiente cuando ganarían la atención de toda la crítica y del gran público.
El éxito del trabajo, al que ayudo sus explosivos conciertos y sus no menos destacables atuendos, les lleva a editar un segundo disco aún más apocalíptico en 2001 que se editaría bajo el título de su estado natal “Iowa”.
